The materials that I am requesting will help my students learn the social skills they need. Many of these students deal with trauma and lack appropriate parental support to develop these skills on their own or through their family experiences. I plan to use these materials to make this learning fun while they are strengthening necessary skills for everyday life. One of the resources I requested is a board game called the Social Skills board game. I can teach the class how to play this game and then it can become an independent center where small groups of students learn from each other as they take turns and share materials to build social skills together. Many of my resources are picture story books such as The Lemonade Hurricane, Noni Speaks Up, and Before We Eat. These books will be read whole group so we will have a chance to explore each individually and have engaging conversations about the characters or the problem/solution. In the Lemonade Hurricane, we can discuss why the character was called a lemonade hurricane - what types of things did she do to earn that nickname? What things can she do so that she is not referred to as the lemonade hurricane anymore? Social skills matter and it shouldn't be assumed that children are coming to school with these skills. It is my job as their teacher to teach them how to develop and maintain positive social interactions. These materials will provide for hands on, small group, engaging activities that will build and strengthen social skills.
