Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines are rich, authentic nonfiction texts that are extremely engaging for my students. Students are able to touch, own, and interact with printed material. They will be able to analyze through writing, circling, and responding directly to information in the magazines. Many times students struggle with nonfiction text, but students are intrigued by the varied topics covered by the magazines which encourages even the most reluctant readers. I plan to use these magazines to support my students' content knowledge in Science and Social Studies as well as to help develop more independent readers. My students with special needs as well as my English language learners will especially benefit from the bright and colorful visuals that support comprehension. This is a truly cross-curricular resource for my classroom!
