Students need to understand the vital nature of groundwater, even if it is not their primary source of water. Here in Milwaukee, students assume that water is an unlimited resource due to our location on Lake Michigan; however, we are impacted by current issues in our neighboring aquifers. They do not understand the interconnections between surface and groundwater. Students need to know about groundwater because local and regional issues such as high capacity wells, aquifer depletion, and groundwater contamination will come to affect them in the future. These issues are already affecting Lake Michigan as neighboring cities request access to lake water due to these issues. An understanding of the fundamental properties of groundwater will help them to become both water stewards and informed decision makers.
