Literacy is fundamentally important for the development of children, and fifth graders are no exception. Entering middle school, students are really coming into their own and books allow them the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the pages of their favorite stories. Students interpret themes, analyze character development, expand their vocabulary, and increase their understanding of the world around them through reading. Despite being works of fiction, books nevertheless mirror aspects of society and people at large. In providing literature that students are interested in, their learning is individualized and the daily lessons are able to cater to their needs.
