I teach American Literature in a Title I public school in Georgia, and one of my goals for the year is to improve the literacy of my students. Many of my 11th grade students have never left the state and have a very small world-view. By providing these students with Upfront magazine, we can broaden their view of the world while also helping to improve their literacy skills. I plan to teach one article each week from the magazine and have students respond to the article in a variety of ways. This could include discussion, research, and written responses. Our American Lit textbooks cover very little non-fiction, and they are 15 years old and falling apart. We need more up-to-date resources for these students. Access to these news magazines that are written for a teen audience would be a huge asset to my classroom. Specifically, I teach a unit on social justice/civic engagement, and these magazines will be a great resource during this unit to supplement historical documents like the Declaration of Independence and many of the writings of Dr. Martin Luther King.
