Students are not able to sit, focus, and attend to instructional and academic demands when they have been exposed to trauma; neglect, abuse, lack of resources, drug use in the home, absent parents, etc. Additionally, students who are not exposed to trauma directly but experience second hand trauma by being around friends and classmates who are exposed may also find themselves feeling big emotions they are unsure how to deal with. Sensory supports allow the child to escape without leaving the learning environment, calm down, think, re-regulate, and process experiences they are unable to process independently. Sensory supports in the classroom benefit students, teachers, and other staff who may otherwise be dealing with the student in a crisis situation. These items are tools, not toys! They will promote mental health and wellness for ALL and give the classroom teacher the opportunity to reach out and support the student even more!
