Children learn best when they are able to connect and see relationships. Having high quality picture books to which students can relate means that children will reach for those texts more often. When children reach for books more often it means higher reading achievement. But it's not just about reading achievement! Children must see themselves reflected in classroom materials. When a teacher chooses a book to read to ALL students, and that book reflects a minority culture, the student's sense of self esteem and self worth rises dramatically. I want our children validated in every way they can possibly be validated.
