Flexible seating is still something fairly new in the realm of education. The idea is that students can be more successful in their learning journey when they aren't just sitting in a chair and desk facing the front of the classroom for seven or so hours. When we have independent reading time or small group time, students can break off and have the chance to use the flexible seating. A classroom is a home for students. When they are asked to sit at a desk for the full school day, this takes away some of that feeling. When I'm working with small groups, I would like the opportunity for my students to sit in the wobble chairs whether it be with me or at their desks. When they're having small group discussions or curling up with a good book, I want them to be able to sit in something other than their desk chair because it's going to create a more welcoming environment. Flexible seating changes the physical environment of the classroom in a good way. It provides new areas of the classroom for students to continue to engage in learning. For some students, it may improve their attention, focus, and motivation in the classroom. It also changes the way students think about a classroom. They start to see that just because they leave home to come to school, it doesn't mean they aren't at home.
