2nd grade is a crucial year to promote and develop the love of reading! All year long my kiddos practice purposeful reading, sustained reading, “reading is thinking” and “great readers become great writers”. We use mentor texts to show examples of reading skills and author’s purpose. We discuss the pictures books create in our minds. I want them to leave 2nd grade with a new outlook on reading and the power it has on all the many aspects of life! I’d like to use this cafe-style table and chairs to create a “grown-up” reading area for my kiddos. I’d like the kids to associate this “special corner” with reading-to-self, so that they feel the power and importance of getting lost in a great book! This furniture is compact yet sturdy, perfect for an elementary room. It also gives a different type of seating to the students, rather than the standard desks. I have seen these café tables in other classrooms and they’re always occupied by students, always a popular place to sit. My students will be amazed that strangers care enough to give them such an awesome gift!
