The school in which I teach is located in a very small town. Students do not have much exposure to different ways of living. I want students to be able to learn about other cultures and traditions. I want students to know that we are all different, but that it is okay. We need to learn about other traditions and beliefs and respect them. I am requesting a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books to teach many cultures to students who might not otherwise be exposed. Our titles include The Legend of Old Befana, The Polar Bear Son, Trombone Shorty, The Carpenter's Gift: A Christmas Tale about the Rockefeller Center Tree and many more. I want my students to have the ability to travel the world through books. The best way I know to do this is through the books I have selected to share with them. We do not have textbooks at our school, so I am relying on these books to be the main resource for our lessons. I believe students deserve to be exposed to places and cultures that are beyond the boundaries of our small town.
