As a math teacher at KHS, I am always looking for ways to engage students to learn by making it more real-life. My goal this year is to start the process of farm to table. Students will plant seeds, transplant baby plants, measure their growth weekly, graph their heights over time, and monitor the differences between a control group versus variables: direct sunlight, shade, double water, half water, fertilizer. Although we won’t be able to sell this year, produce will be given to the culinary instructo, so he has free ingredients to cook with weekly. These are some of the items we could think of so far: Onions, Green onions, Basil, Lettuce, Kale, Cherry Tomatoes, Squash, Papaya. Over the last two weeks, I've already spent over $300 of potting soil and perlite from Walmart and Ace. I would rather save money by using free dirt. The agriculture science teacher just gave birth and might be out on leave for another couple of months. She is being lenient with us by letting students use as much land square footage as we want. Water is free, but we don't have turf seeds or potting soil. Having tillers would allow us to break up hard dirt and weeds into quality soil for planting. The second goal this year is to grow seashore paspalum grass. There is ample space in the farm to grow seashore paspalum grass sod to help our custodians spruce up our campus, reduce erosion, and decrease dirt blown into the classrooms. If you are able to help in any way or offer hints, our school will be grateful. Feel free to contact me at any time. Thank you.
