I have watched children lay on their desks, put up their feet in their desk, stand and it gets even more creative! That made me realize not all students work best with a one size fits all approach. I worked really hard to create a flexible seating environment for second grade and saw the success. My students love to be able to take responsibility for finding the seating choices and learning areas that work best for them. They are more engaged, ready to learn, and better able to manage what works best for them. We do the daily five - read (to self, partner, listen to reading), word work, and writing. The students are able to choose where they sit and meet what needs they have based on their mood, learning modality, etc. by having flexible seating they can own their learning. It puts them responsible for choosing a spot that works best for them. That all being said, I am so excited to be in fifth grade now! I have to restart my quest for flexible seating due to fifth graders being larger. Will you help by class ensure ownership and success?
