Molecular biology is very abstract. In my classroom I will try to make genetics more relatable to teenagers by discussing what happens when DNA goes wrong. In the film, Lorenzo's Oil, parents of a young child find out that their son is critically ill because of a genetic disorder. The parents study the disorder, care for their child and find a reason for their son's defect. I use the film to teach DNA structure, protein synthesis, mutations, genetic technology, genetic disorders and empathy for those who have afflicted family members. The culmination of the project consists of summarizing all these concepts in a baby book of a fictional child with an assigned genetic disorder. Materials requested for project will be used to complete the baby book project and creative projects through the semester. Students attending my high school have little to no money to spend on school supplies. All of the supplies will enhance their creativity while making abstract issues more relatable to everyday life.
