Working in a special education classroom, there are always a lot of different needs. One of the needs that many of my students' experience is sensory-based. The bright fluorescent lighting in schools is a trigger for many of my students. It is harsh and can be very overwhelming. This is made even more so due to the fact that my classroom has no windows, which means fluorescent lighting is our only option. I want to provide my students with a comfortable classroom that will allow them to focus and learn without being triggered or overstimulated. Lighting is a great way of doing this. In providing a way to illuminate my classroom without the need for the overhead lighting my students will have one less barrier to their learning.
