The holiday season is about more than just consumption. In the world of Fortnite and 2K19, it is becoming increasingly important to directly teach altruism in schools, especially schools in high-risk communities. This season I hope to give my students the opportunity to turn their old shoe boxes into boxes for Operation Christmas Child: an organization that sends Christmas gifts to children all over the world. When you fund this project, you are purchasing the gifts with which to fill the boxes. My students will then spend an afternoon packing the boxes to be sent off and writing letters to go with them. Teaching kindness is important, and what better way to do so than an experience like this.
