I have been teaching English to 8th graders for 6 years. Without question, the most exciting unit we cover is speech, debate, argument and rhetoric. Students of this age love to argue.Teaching them the proper way to argue requires topics that are relevant to them. They also need a working knowledge of world events. Finding solid sources has been an ongoing struggle. These magazines fit the bill for a number of reasons; 1. they reach a group of students that are difficult to excite. 2. They are terrific for working with small groups who need a little extra support. 3. They also appeal to higher level learners who use the information they gather from these monthly magazines to do further research. 4. I also use them to lead class discussion. For these reasons, and others, I ask for you generous support to supply this resource to my students.
