I have been teaching for 27 years, and boy have I seen the dynamics of the classroom change. We are a 1:1 classroom, meaning that every student has their on device. I am teaching a generation of students that expect both entertainment and stimuli constantly. We are living in a media world, and I am just a teacher trying to figure it all out. How can I help them hear me? Headphones are a part of them. They are a generation of students that are used to taking in information through their headphones. I have learned that I can send my students a read aloud on their Chromebooks and they are much more likely to comprehend the story. Why? In my opinion the reason is because it is just the story and their ears and eyes. However, when I try and read a story to the whole group most are attentive. Although, you have that 1/4 that is either fidgeting with something they brought to the carpet, playing with their neighbor, daydreaming, or just simply captivated by my facial expressions as I read. I want them to hear my voice. I think it is important to teach them strategies for listening. I would like to try making my voice live and real and being streamed into their audio. After much consideration, thought, and internet research, my idea was a tour guide sound system . It seems like the perfect way to help strengthen listening comprehension because of the sense of speaking one on one with my students. I can definitely see me trying this during whole group instruction when introducing a new concept or reviewing an old one, reading a story, or modeling a writing genre.
