Do you sit at one place all day for your job? For me, I know if I am in only one place, I will lose focus, energy and the motivation to work. It's the same for my third graders. They spend over an hour each day sitting on a bus. They sit all day at one desk in class. My students need more choices on where to sit and how to find what works best for their needs. Having an opportunity throughout the day to choose where to sit and who to sit with makes a world of difference in my students' productivity and stamina. I have noticed improved attention and more focused engagement in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. I have noticed new friendships made just by having the flexibility to choose. More carpet space also allows for students to work alone without interruption from being too close to another student at a desk. The Nature theme is a natural choice for our curriculum and our area. My students live in a beautiful place but often have never been outside their neighborhood due to transportation or working families. Bringing some nature in the classroom will encourage seeing nature outside the classroom. And having more carpet space will give us all a lot more freedom to learn and grow!
