As the Chinese Proverb says, “I listen and I will forget, I see and I will remember, I do and I understand”. The majority of my student come from low income families so most of them do not have the resources to create and experiment with building, testing, and evaluating the cause and effect of minor or major changes to a building or a circuit board. All of the projects I chose could be built, modified, taken apart, and rebuilt for years to come. For the past 10 years, my district has placed a huge emphasis on Reading and Math which I understand is important but, at the middle school level, students are starting to discover all the the careers that will be available to them and not all of the will require 4 year degree. By providing more STEM experiences, they cannot only explore careers but also increase their critical thinking skills which will help in all jobs. My district has a seven year rotation for adopting curriculum materials which was four years ago for Science but the state adopted the Next Generation Science Standards with leaves my students without the skills to compete with their peers across the state and country. I think that they desire the opportunity.
