Representation matters, always. When students can relate to texts, they are more likely to be engaged and more receptive to what is being read. These books are representative of my students' culture, their environment, their ethnicities, and serve as inspiration. I preach and am a testament to the idea that "If you can read, you can achieve anything." I want to encourage my students to read as much as possible, and to read everything! Students will be more inspired and motivated to read books written by authors look like them and include characters that they can more easily relate to.
