As a new counselor, I have not had the time/money to collect a lot of the great resources out there to help facilitate counseling at the classroom level. I do classroom guidance with every student in the school which gives me the opportunity to get to know each of my 300+ students personally and by name. I am able to see first hand what their needs are and in turn I can help facilitate learning in the classroom in conjunction with social/emotional success on an individual level. The items I am asking for will help to guide students in learning and understanding themselves and the people around them. The board games such as chutes and ladders, Guess who, and emoji uno will help students to learn team building, social awareness and social skills with their classmates as game day centers. STEM materials such as Straw collected, Emido building blocks and magnetic building blocks will all be used in the classroom guidance setting as centers (stored in clear containers) to help facilitate mindfulness, team building, friendship and mind/body awareness. Children learn by doing and using these building materials is a great hands on addition to individual play therapy sessions to get students using their hands and playing while talking through problems and everyday life. Games like Jenga are used in small group counseling sessions to help students open up and work through their problems with the group. The Stress balls, stress toys, fidgets and flexible ball chairs will all be used to help individual students who struggle with focus and attention. The liquid timers are used in classrooms around the school to help students who struggle with anger management to become more aware of their feelings and emotions and use the timer as a calming initiative.
