The students I serve are special education preschool students who receive speech and language intervention due to a myriad of diagnoses from global developmental delay to Down Syndrome to Autism. They are predominantly nonspeaking so as a speech and language pathologist, it is my responsibility to afford them another way to communicate. It is amazing to see their eyes light up when they are finally understood because of the communication supports from low technology to high technology are made available to them. With communication support, their world becomes larger as they are able to actively participate in the world around them similar to their typically developing peers. As often happens with students that have significant difficulty communicating, inappropriate behavior has become their historical tool to get their message across. With communication supports in place, this behavior decreases. Amazing!
