My students developed the idea for this project on their own because they want to make a difference in their own health and the health of others. To help them with their idea, I partnered with LSU to provide them with knowledge and the initial supplies to start. Now they need help to purchase a shed and a cart to be able to safely continue their project. They have no place to safely store and lock up the supplies so that they can continue to be successful in their endeavors. This project provides them with lessons and guidance that will help them to learn to make healthier eating choices, show them how to respect and protect the environment, and teach them a skill that they can use at home now and in the future. This project will have a lasting impact on the students that will affect their families' lives as well. It will give students authentic learning experiences, build their problem-solving skills, and help them learn to work cooperatively with others. The students built their own vegetable garden and planted citrus trees. They built three raised beds and planted tomatoes, egg plants, various peppers, carrots, potatoes, and squash. They also started a fruit orchard by planting fruit trees: lemon, grapefruit, pear, orange. Their engagement is phenomenal and they work hard because this is something that they feel is important to them. However, they spend a lot of time hauling equipment back and forth because there is no storage area and it is hard to move things around. Dangerous supplies and equipment has to be kept out in the open in a corner of the class. The shed and the cart will provide a much needed secure place for storage.
