Story time is a highlight of my students' day. They laugh and giggle during funny parts. They interact with the books with curiosity. They participate with excitement and respond with visual choices by pointing, gazing or verbalizing. The class bursts out into laughter when The old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books spits out the back pack. In order to make the story accessible for my students, I had to purchase the books and adapt them in two different ways. The 1st copy of the book was adapted for my student who has a cortical visual impairment. I place key images on black or white background. I highlight the image I want her to focus on in yellow. The 2nd copy of the same book, I take it apart, laminate and bind it. I then add velcro dots and key images of the story in order for my student to follow along with the sequence of the story. The 3rd copy of the book I use and let the students access it if they wish. I add to the fun by bringing real objects that enhance the story. Being in a new classroom this year means I inherited a standard classroom library that my kids cannot access independently. These adapted books of fun classics and modern stories will give my students access to books they would normally not have access to. I currently only have 2 adapted sets of books in my library. They do take some time and resources like a laminator, book binder, ink, velcro dots, magnetic strips etc. I am determined to keep adding adapted books to my classroom. My students have already demonstrated a preference in choosing the books that have been adapted specifically for them.
