My students are 9th and 10th graders who are currently enrolled in Intensive Reading. Students in my classroom come from a wide variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. On average, my students read at a third and fourth grade level and have very low self-esteem. My classroom students tend to be embarrassed around their peers and often times act out for attention because of their inability to read. I teach in a high poverty high school that also serves as an English as a Second Language Center.
