With your donations, we were able to create a space for relaxing, calming and self-regulating, as well as a space for fun and expression. Although we are a multi-classroom department of self-contained students with Autism, my classroom specifically works with students who may show aggressive behaviors, require more breaks and need assistance expressing how they feel. Last year, we, as a class, were able to empty, clean and prepare an extra-large closet space and turn it into a sensory room. Instead of a closet full of books and leftover materials, we now have an open space with a trampoline, peapod and comfy couch. The students can use this space to release energy (trampoline and floor tiles), or to calm and self-regulate in stressful situations (peapod, comfy couch). Their sensory needs are met by touch, sound, sight, and smell thanks to the donation of the bubble aquarium, sensory lamp, sequin fabric, diffusers and body socks.\r\nAlthough our school year has only just started, the students have already found comfort using this room as an optional outlet when they are in need of a break, time to themselves, or are just in need of a calming space. Our students are learning to verbally and gesturally request time in the room, as well as identifying new preferences and needs to assist with their social and emotional deficits. The smiles on their faces when they jump on the trampoline, their efforts to work in class so they can earn reward-based sensory time, and the minimized behaviors in the classroom due to the ability to regulate and self-calm independently is only possible because of your contributions. With time, we would also like to use this area to encourage social skills with student interactions and group activities using the items in this room.\r\nSince we have so many items within the classroom, the students have gravitated to different materials in the short time since our school year began. The trampoline was immediately the favorite, followed by the peapod and the aquarium. Even the teachers and staff at our school had a favorite...the floor tiles! \r\nThis room will also hopefully help introduce additional sensory and self-calming strategies that the students cannot only use at school, but at home and in the community as well. The faculty and staff of Englewood's CSS program as well as our amazing Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, and Behavioral Therapist would like to thank you all for your help in creating such an amazing space for our students.","fullyFundedDate":1746707599624,"projectUrl":"project/css-sensory-room/9225674/","projectTitle":"CSS Sensory Room","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Davis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9990579_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746040419815","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9990579"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_46094","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1896,"numTeachers":92,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":29,"percentWhite":21,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.8,"schoolId":46094,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Englewood High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Englewood High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/duval-county-public-schools/englewood-high-school/46094"}
