These materials will help me create the classroom library my students deserve, with well-loved books representing a wide variety of cultures including their own. Currently only 55% of our students are meeting or exceeding state standards for language arts and literacy, but creating a reading lifestyle through books, posters, and activities will help bring all students to better at-level reading. Building students' independent reading skills with a strong classroom library will become the foundation for a lifetime filled with reading and research. With critically acclaimed books featuring characters who look like them and characters who don't, my students will learn how to become stronger and more empathetic readers and human beings. With comfortable seating that encourages a flexible learning environment, students will be able to find themselves a nice nook to read these books in and feel comfortable and safe, even when they don't have that luxury in their own homes. Through this classroom library, these students will gain the skills to read critically and thoughtfully in English and in Spanish, preparing them for a lifetime of learning.
