Today students need to talk and discuss their discoveries they find in math. The most successful method I have seen is the use of flexible seating. This means there are multiple ways for students to learn and be comfortable. This past year we utilized: cushions with a low table, circle tables, floor pillow with lap desks, standing tables, stools, and baskets. The students that needed more movement throughout their day chose a standing desk, they felt free to move around. Students that felt more cozy and comfortable closest to the ground chose baskets and cushions. Flexible seating has lead to my students feeling comfortable in the classroom and feeling free to collaborate with their classmates. There was little to no redirection from me this past year, because the seating helped them focus and stay on task! Some of the top companies in the world utilize a unique workspace to increase productivity, collaboration, and creation. I would like to offer more seating options this year for independent and group work time. Together we discover how FUN math is and why shouldn't it be? In our daily math groups, students focus on different skills and activities. What students have enjoyed most are competitive games where they don't even realize they are doing math and games that require logic, reasoning, and conceptualized thinking. All these skills help students build stronger number sense, an essential foundation for all mathematics. I would like to increase the amount of resources I can offer them for their daily groups.
