Many students in my class report detesting reading because they did not see themselves reflected in the curriculum, or in any of the things they were asked to read across their subject areas in school. They have had poor experiences with learning how to read in English and understanding how reading relates to academic success. In addition, according to the U.S. Census, fewer than 3 % of our Hmong communities’ elders are still living with us (less than 12,000 adults age 65+). These elders are living books to keeping the language, culture, and history alive for generations to come. There are only a handful of Hmong authors in the U.S. telling stories that are relevant to the students I am working with , so why not more Hmong authors? Why only a handful and not more? What barriers keep Hmong inspired to be authors from publishing their stories? Knowing that our language and elders are disappearing faster than ever, and the oral language is fading, the written language is the new wave of younger Hmong generations. We must inspire more students to read books that looks like them and create a pathway to create for more young authors to tell their stories. The dozen Hmong authors who participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event will not only get to inspire students to love to read, but also pave the way for many young authors to start writing their stories to have a voice and to leave a legacy.
