I am transitioning my traditional middle school Art room into a choice based studio environment using an engaging instructional approach called Teaching for Artist Behavior (TAB). Instead of me planning what artwork each student will make, students choose what center to work at and what to create. Students will be challenged to create in a medium of their own choice after I demonstrate techniques and provide a prompt to inspire a response. I am restructuring the classroom environment to have a variety of different centers including Drawing, painting, CAD, Collage, Fibers, Ceramics & Sculpture. Within the sculpture center, students will enjoy a new woodworking station with a miter box for cutting, wood glue and clamps for joining. I have drawing and painting supplies but lack diverse seating and storage to accommodate a variety of stations featuring a range of art materials and a designated research center. Pegboards will provide a clear view of materials accessible for students to choose from. Headphones and comfortable seating will allow for students to include reading and videos as they research a chosen topic to express with their art. Employers and colleges are seeking innovative thinkers. Choice-based learning engages the learner to think and consider various options. Students use bits of acquired information to formulate their own expression in the creation of something entirely new.
