Math students need calculators. In my class, students will be performing basic operations on integers and rational numbers, and they will be learning to graph functions. Graphing calculators will specifically support my students in these goals by helping them attain precision in their calculations, and by providing an accessible technology with which to graph functions. Therefore, they need these calculators to meet the standards and to achieve on state tests. Access to calculators provides additional support, which will help lessen students' math anxiety and increase their self-confidence as learners. By middle school, students are beginning to learn algebra and are expected to have an understanding of the arithmetic associated with it. However, this is not always the case, and students can fall behind in algebra because of gaps in their knowledge of arithmetic. Being able to provide a class set of calculators would allow these students to continue to learn algebra without penalizing them for the skills they are still working to master, and would benefit all of my students, from those still intimidated by math to those who already love math.
