Last year was my first year as a teacher. I did not know everything I would need to purchase for my classroom and the cost of everything. With the resources I had, I made flexible seating work and a great first year. This year I will be starting my second year and am very excited. Last year I learned that every child is so different and if they can't learn the way we teach, then we need to teach the way they learn. That was very hard considering it was all so new to me. After researching a lot I made it a mission to meet my child's needs. I discovered flexible seating, different ways to incorporate manipulatives, fine motor objects, etc. At the end of the day, my students are 5-6 and have so much to learn. Every child is gifted, they just unwrap their package at different timing. That is a powerful quote that I strongly believe. Some students need something more than just a regular chair. As an adult I find it hard to stay still in a long meeting, I can only imagine how a 5-year-old feels. This past year allowing students to sit on the floor and use clipboards or letting them stand made them take charge in their learning and make the choice that is best for them. Having different options in my classroom will be even better for them and will meet other students with different needs. I also am asking for different manipulatives and items that will be used in the classroom and will help them build their fine motor skills.
