While there are unique skills students must learn in the social studies classroom, the use of literature to supplement study is critical in engaging students in the lives and stories of others, as well as fostering a sense of empathy and higher-level understanding of the broad human experience. When students can relate to and connect with the experiences of those they study, the learning opportunity is not only a richer one, but also one that builds on prior experiences. "Blood on the River: James Town 1607" by Elisa Carbone is a novel that takes you through the personal journey of a young page boy of Captain John Smith who boards the Susan Constant to travel to the new world. I would like my students to each have a copy of the book to read whether it be as a class, in partnerships, or independently. Students will also be creating biographies of a character of their choice from the story. I believe providing my students with the opportunity to learn state standards through this powerful story will not only enhance their love for literature, but leave them with knowledge that will last a lifetime.
