Throughout my entire experience teaching English, there has been one book that has consistently rated as the best and most thought provoking texts amongst my English scholars: The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Malcolm's transformation from a smart and traumatized kid, to clever and troubled hustler, into one of the most important and inspirational leaders of the 20th century is a story that has resonated with so many of my kids. My students see their world and themselves reflected in Malcolm's story, and engage with the learning experience in a more thoughtful and reflective way as a result of it. However, the only issue with the text is its length and density; in order to break down the who story, a whole school year is needed, not just one quarter. Additionally, for students who struggle with reading, as a few of my scholars do, Malcolm's language can be a barrier, which may turn them off from reading the text. This is why I became so excited when I read X by Ilyasah Shabazz. Here was a novel that was true to Malcom's story and experience (Shabazz is his daughter after all), while being written in the format of a young adult novel that is accessible and engaging to students of all abilities and interests. Malcolm's story of trauma, racism, education, and ultimately redemption is an important one to tell. Through teaching this version of the story I am excited to bring the thoughtful and necessary conversations from previous years, with the engagement in reading that a good young adult novel can bring amongst teenagers. Please help bring this experience, and all the values and teachings of Malcolm X, to my scholars.
