As a student I remember sticking to the classics. There is nothing wrong with the classics, but there is also nothing wrong with branching off from them to other magnificent pieces of literature. I would like to branch off into the graveyard book, which would not only be a motivational read for at least half of my students, but will include great teaching opportunities. The Graveyard Book has so many great lessons, both in language arts, and for life in general. There are many occasions where students need to read between the lines, for instance, you are never told who Silas, and The Lady On The Grey are. This would promote great discussion in the classroom as to who they are, in which students would need to defend their answers. I have so many more great ideas for this book that would lead me to write a copious amount. However, that would be too long, so I will simply state that this would be an exciting, and invaluable addition to my classroom.
