When students are able to direct their own learning, by choosing interesting topics, a teacher can make every ELA standard come to life. That is what I hope to do with a classroom library geared toward the interests of the students. Students will choose their adventure! Whether they make meaningful discoveries through a writing prompt that connects their world to a historic one, or a comprehensive discussion about the uses of technology in modern day Africa (The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind), they will learn that reading opens doors to worlds that they could only dream of. Not only that, but the infusion of STEAM topics show the students how reading is relevant across all disciplines. Many of my students look forward to careers in STEAM and I can’t wait to help expose them to all the things that can be done!
