The books that I am requesting will help me expand my current character education curriculum in my classroom. As a kindergarten teacher, I have always taught my students about being kind, respectful, and responsible. But after participating in a book study led by my district, I learned just how important it is to explicitly teach these social and emotional skills. Not all children entering the classroom have been taught skills such as being respectful, honest, caring, and responsible. These skills are needed to be successful in school and in life. My students will be able to learn about these skills through hearing these stories read aloud in the classroom and completing the activities that I have already purchased through the Teachers Pay Teachers website. All I need now are the books that go along with the weekly lessons. That’s where these books come in. They are not the typical books that I can order through my classroom scholastic book orders, making them harder for me to acquire. These books will not only benefit my 24 students but also several other classes, as I plan to share the books with my kindergarten colleagues.
