I will be teaching my Kindergarten through 4th-grade art students remotely and possibly in a hybrid (online and in-person) format this year! I want to make sure I can teach my students while also parenting my own children with the least amount of distraction and the most amount of learning possible! This requires the digital tools to do the work, art supplies, and resources to inspire my students to create!
I will use the document camera to show my students step-by-step directions, the digital drawing tablet to be able to translate our art units onto the computer screen, the books to inspire my students, the notebooks to reach students who do not have the supplies for paper at home, and the headset and lighting to create a space in my home where students and I can see and hear each other.
Not only do I teach my students art, but I use visual art and literature as a way of connecting with them. I center my units on social-emotional and relevant topics to encourage my students to use their artwork to work through the emotions they are feeling while moving through life during a pandemic and social upheaval in a major city. Many of them feel isolated and stressed and I want my class to feel like a respite from these heavy emotions. In order to do this effectively, my students at the very least need paper to draw on, new books to inspire them and open their minds to new ideas, and I need the technology to get the artistic learning to them!
