As an English teacher, one of my primary goals is to help my students become engaged and excited life-long readers. I will be doing an independent reading project with my students each term of the school year. This project allows students choice in what they read and in how they demonstrate their understanding. Students deserve access to a wide range of quality, age-appropriate literature. They need books that contain topics that are relevant to their lives and that model beautiful writing. My overarching goal with this project is to help students see the value of reading and become life-long learners through the love of reading. Having a classroom library will provide students with the resources they will need to be successful with this project. Students will have choice in what they choose to read. They will be allowed to work at their own pace throughout the term, and will learn to track their own learning progress through this process. Students will be given individualized guidance, instruction and help as needed. “Many of our revered celebrities and leaders are avid readers. Indeed, it’s hard to find successful people who aren’t. Reading opened up worldwide avenues for knowledge that non-readers were unable to access." Recent studies conducted by Kidd and Castano (2013) of The New School for Social Research in New York City, suggested that pleasure reading deepened empathy and temporarily allowed the reader a greater understanding of others’ mental states (Wilhelm and Smith, 2014). In other words, the benefits of pleasure reading may have had a much broader impact than previously thought. In addition, reading increases vocabulary, strengthens analytical thinking skills, improves writing skills, and is linked to higher achievement in all content areas.
