My only goal as a reading teacher is to foster a love of reading in my students. For our first novel study, my students read a memoir about a girl who experienced the war in Syria. After we finished the book, we had a very special guest speaker, a former U.S. Ambassador to Syria. This experience broadened my students' worldview. Our next novel study was on a book about bullying. My students connected with the characters in the book, who were middle school kids themselves. This book helped deepen empathy within my students. The goal of this novel study is twofold. Firstly, I did not choose this book, my students did. I want them to take ownership of what they are reading in hopes to encourage a habit of reading and increase engagement. Secondly, this book is highly relevant to issues within our society today. I want to shed light on racial injustices that are occurring in this country and create a space for positive discourse around a difficult topic.
