Some of those conversations I have had over the years have been harder than others. Those little minds slowly begin to realize that not everyone is exactly the same. Some children are more accepting to this idea, while others unfortunately think poorly of themselves or others. I want to change that. I want each and every student in my class to feel empowered! I want them to embrace what makes them unique and to not be afraid to show it to others. My hope is that this will then help to form a strong sense of empathy and understanding to those around them as well. This is why I want to create WONDER WEDNESDAYS! This idea stems from the movie "Wonder," and we will take time every Wednesday morning for a read aloud and class discussion about what makes us unique. I researched books that discuss some hard topics for kinders to understand such as family dynamics, ethnic differences, disabilities, and more. By teaching tolerance and understanding, we can create students who develop strong communication and teamwork skills that ensure a strong classroom environment and support system. Please take a look at the list of books I have found and see if you would be interested in donating one (or funds) to assist in making this project become a reality!
