Upper elementary students are often looked at as the 'role models' of the elementary school community. These students are usually expected to behave properly, perform properly, and sit properly; but even though they are the 'role models', they are still ELEMENTARY school students. Flexible seating in the classroom has been proven time and time again to be beneficial. There are immediate health benefits, as well as long term lasting benefits. Some of the immediate benefits are burning more calories, higher metabolisms, better oxygen flow to the brain, and improved posture. Looking at long term benefits, students are lowering their chances of high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease and more. Not only are there health benefits, but students also feel a sense of ownership and empowerment when having an option of where they feel comfortable to work. Some students just do not perform well when they are forced to sit in a hard chair and square desk. Allowing students to have choice in where they will perform best, and be best engaged, gives the students a sense of ownership in their education.
