I teach at a middle school in a rural town in Northern California. I have three 2-period blocks of 7th grade English. Twenty eight percent of the students have "limited English proficiency" and 89% of the 492 students receive free/reduced lunch prices. Over half of my students are reading at least two to three levels below their grade level. Many of my students do no have books or computers at home and rely heavily on checking materials out from our school library. I am not able to assign any kind of "researching" activity for the students to do at home because they do not have the tools at home to do that. Our entire school shares one computer lab with well-maintained, but outdated computers.
