I want to create a classroom library full of different text types, culturally-relevant books, and books that expose my students to different people and different cultures. Reading is so crucial for children and has so many wonderful outcomes: it stimulates their imagination, expands their understanding of the world, helps them to develop their concentration and focus, creates strong analytical and critical thinking skills, expands vocabulary and develops written skills. I want my students to be able to see themselves, their families and their neighborhood in characters that we read about, storylines and pictures. Research shows that students read better and read more when they read culturally-relevant books. They are able to construct meaning from texts that contain familiar elements because their background knowledge helps them to make predictions and inferences about the story. When students are more engaged in a story, they become more motivated. Finally, in order to build tolerance, understanding, compassion and curiosity, children need numerous opportunities to be exposed to new cultures and people that they may not see every day in their neighborhoods. Books are a great way to do this and evoke valuable discussions!
