Celestial spheres are the perfect way to help students start to understand the night sky. They model the night in a way that allows students to make connections between the Earth, the Sun, the seasons, and other stars. Using a celestial sphere, a student can determine why the Earth is warmer in summer even though it is farther from the Sun. The student can use it to explain why the days are different lengths throughout the year. Students can learn about locations in the sky as well as effects upon the Earth such as direct and indirect heating. These are only a sample of the difficult learning targets students struggle to understand without a celestial sphere model.
