Children with autism can benefit from sensory play in multiple ways. By engaging in sensory activities children can build nerve connections to the brain, improving cognitive growth, develop motor skills, improve handwriting, and engage in social interactions. It is also used as a way of calming an anxious child. Teaching a child in an environment where they have lots of access to sensory will encourage their individual development. A good example of this would be handwriting. By having students build using small objects or using hand tools/molding play doh, helps to develop fine motor skills so that the child can go on to grasp and control a pen when writing. In addition, to sensory materials that help with fine motor skills, it is important to have materials to aid in overstimulation. When in the environment, they're times when a student's senses will get overstimulated. It is necessary to have tools like noise-cancelling headphones that students can turn to so they can focus in those situations.
