When students have disabilities, learning can become overwhelming and downright exhausting at times. Educating students with disabilities is much more than addressing academic needs. It is a careful balance of systematic and explicit instruction to address academics, a strong rapport, and meeting social-emotional needs. When my students become overwhelmed, they need a safe space to calm down.
The materials and supplies and materials I am requesting will help create a sensory break space for my students to address sensory needs, calm down, and return to learning. Students will be able to enter the break space and select a tool that works best for them. One student may choose to enter the pop-up tent to watch the light projector and listen to a rain sound. Another student may choose to climb in the therapy swing or use the weighted blanket for a soft pressure that feels like a hug. Yet another student may feel calmest when they are able to use their hands to engage with a variety of sensory items like the sensory circles or fidget toys. The Time Timer will provide students with a choice from 1-20 minutes to spend in the break space and a visual that helps them understand how much time they have in the break space.
When my students are taught to use this sensory break space, they will be able to take ownership of understanding their own needs/feelings and learn how to appropriately address those needs/feelings. Students who feel safe and calm are much better equipped to make progress towards meeting their goals on their IEP (Individualized Education Program). This sensory break space will not be financially possible for my students without your support and I can't thank you enough for your willingness to support my special education classroom!
