I taught all of my 5th graders to play chess in the beginning of the school year. They did not initially think they could learn this but they are now amazing players. We play at school on rainy days, and they have now started taking out the boards at recess to play other students. Recently, we had a volunteer group paint a giant chessboard on our playground but do not yet have the giant pieces to play. If we get the giant pieces, my students can teach all other grade levels through this hands-on experience. Chess teaches them patience, self-esteem, accountability, and higher level thinking skills. It's also a math game that I believe helps them with higher order thinking. Please afford my students this opportunity. Thank you!
