After years of dreaming, I was just told my wish has been granted. I have been given an entire classroom to set up as a sensory room. Many people think only of those on the autism spectrum as needing a sensory room. That is not the case. There is not one child in my building that I can think of that would not benefit.
Sensory rooms meet four specific needs:
* a therapeutic environment
* allows development of a range of physical skills
* a calming space for kids with emotional or behavioral difficulties
* a place where kids learn to manage their emotions in a controlled
environment so they are ready to access the curriculum
The room will be available to any child throughout the school day, as well as scheduled group times for our Criterion Referenced Instruction (CRI) classes. Just the thought of the kids walking through the door stressed or upset, and seeing them able to calm themselves with stress balls, a punching bag, the sand tray, and many other things brings a smile to my face. Children who are in control of their bodies and emotions are children who are able and ready to learn!
