In Alabama, we are genuinely blessed to have the Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) as a partner in our science classrooms. AMSTI provides the curriculum and materials to help us meet the state standards. Unfortunately, the classroom setup does not lend itself to true scientific discovery. Right now, my students have mismatched individual desks in which to conduct investigations and work cooperatively with others. The surfaces are not flat, and in some cases, are barely hanging onto the rest of the desk. I would like to give my students a true lab experience which fosters teamwork and discovery.
